Dear younger self,
The epoch of Posthumanism is upon us!
On January 17th, 2045, at approximately 02:45 CST, in a secure militarised Vaulted Bunker Complex (VBC), deep under the Neo-New Orleans Metropolis, Mega Genesis began… with my accidental creation.
There had been many attempts at creating MegaGens, enhanced humans, human and animal hybrids, new life, cybernetics and mutants. Whilst some had achieved modest success, I’ve fortuitously created a monster. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the Modern Prometheus, was a vision, a sleeping trance, a premonition. Mary Shelley in her nightmare, was foreseeing the future. Foretelling my crime against humanity. To my knowledge, she, my creation… she was the very first.
Good people of the past world… meet Rogil.
Its pronounced Ro’gil. It’s the name she chose for herself. Rogil has many aliases and many given names. The two most commonly used are Cyber Wind and TeleMantic.
She’s the first of The Mega Generation, these beings are also known by many names; Megaborn, MegaGens, Super People, Mythists, Mutants, Monsters, Posthumans, Nextgen and so on.
I can’t control what people wish to call these creations, no more than I can control my own creation, my Rogil. I must undo what I started but fear I cannot. Nobody here can. It’s too late. The only way is for you to do it. You guys from the past. Kill me. Kill me now, before it’s too late. Do it before I graduate from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Class of 2025. The War Class, so we’ve become to be known. Sometimes I wish we hadn’t survived the nuclear war. The world would be well on its way to healing by now if we hadn’t, and this nightmarish present world -future to you- wouldn’t exist.
Rogil is a MegaGen, we’ve covered this much. I’ll not tell you how she was created, out of fear that the method will be recreated, and more monsters will be given the dark gift of life. But I will tell you… that these beings are diverging, forever evolving, faster than we can classify them. They have a very dynamic taxonomic rank, which MegaGenologists and Posthumanologists are struggling to keep up with. Don’t ask me the difference between those two titles, I don’t fucking know, alright. You can’t ask me anyway. I’m over twenty years in the future. Your telegrams will arrive two decades too late. But the simple answer to most things, is I don’t, by heavens, know. That’s what the world is now, nobody quite knows anything for sure anymore.
The problem arises with The Dewey Decimal Classification System’s principle that all living things have a common ancestor. If you go back far enough, that is. They have modified descendants of organisms which preceded them… evolution. MegaGens do not have the same ancestry tree of life.
This is why I keep my own records. But please note, I began my doctorhood as a Doctor of Computer Science. I was a Secret Intelligence Service Cyber, Science Technology & Weapons Analyst. SCTWA, put that in ya milk and suck it. It’s all fancy words, I’m a geek, a legal hacker, a glorified keyboard warrior. I’m not an evolutionary biologist, remember this.
The classical hierarchy of biological taxonomy, or the phylogenetic tree of life, begins with Life. No shocker there. Moving down towards more specific subdivisions; Domin, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species.
By my own taxonomic rank of Rogil, she is a:
1- Life- She is alive, living, but not like us.
2- Domain- MegaGen - she certainly isn’t an archaeon, single-celled organism, nor a bacterium. And finally, of the three, she isn’t a eukaryote, she doesn’t contain eukaryotic cells like us. She’s pure energy, the truth is, we don’t know what she’s made of, but I have my suspicions. So for domain, we’re forced to lump all, or most of these new creations under the domain classification as MegaGen.
3- Kingdom- Posthuman & Postnuclear -of the five classical kingdoms of animal, plant, fungi, protist and monera, I guess because she came from the likeness and hands of humans, she is closest to the animal kingdom, yet she isn’t made of the same stuff as us. Perhaps she has a soul and consciousness like us, and that’s it, that’s where the physical matter similarities end. Again we’re forced to lump all MegaGen as Posthuman & Postnuclear Kingdom, which at the moment, seems to only arise from the likeness and creations of humans. Perhaps there are more Kingdoms of MegaGen, who knows? Perhaps more will evolve, as I suspect, unless you kill the past me.
4- Phylum – Chordata Prime- Phylum means grouping organisms or animals based on common specialization of body plan, or there morphological or developmental similarities. Again she simply don’t fit any group. By my observations, she habituates aerially, terrestrially and even aquatically, perhaps for short periods, but mostly she lives in electromagnetic fields. Like no other living thing I have, and I dare say the world has,’ ever witnessed. She’s motile, meaning she can move, she moves very, very fast. As fast as lightning bolts, or electricity. Potentially, her speed is bound only by the speed of light, inside the medium in which she travels. She’s a heterotroph, which means she doesn’t make her own food; she must go and get it and consume it. She has bilateral symmetry like humans, she looks very much human at times. She has cephalization, meaning the nervous system tissue is concentrated in her head region, and travels down her absent spine. I believe she is closest to the Phylum Chordata group because whilst she’s an invertebrate, in fact she has no bones, she must have a notochord which forms when she is terrestrial, to hold her energy together into a humanised form. I coin Rogil’s Phylum group as Chordata- Prime.
5- Class – NeuroGen- These are the classic classifications we know as, mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians. Again- you’ll grow tired of my saying this – she doesn’t fit in any group. We don’t know if she can replicate or reproduce and if she did, would she feed her young with pure energy from herself or from a different source? We know she gains energy, nutrition and survival from electrical stimulus consumed into a temporary terrestrial form of a neurological system. Thus I coin her classification as NeuroGen.
6- Order – ElectroMantics- Order refers to which type of NeuroGen she is. If we go back to mammals, we humans are primates, because we share genetic and anatomical features of our ape-like ancestors. From what I know of, Rogil can move extremely fast, like teleporting. In one of her commonly used aliases TeleMantic, the tele prefix means to cover distance. And The suffix mantic means having powers of divination, prophetic visions and perhaps magical qualities. She gains her energy and her travelling speed from electricity. Thus I coined her Order as ElectroMantics, meaning those who eat electricity and may see visions of the future. Rogil’s visions are fragmented, disjointed and murky with trauma hallucinations, but she still gets them.
7- Family- Cyberian- The Human Family is Hominidae, the great apes or hominids. This group is different to other primata because we great apes have developed distinctive characteristics, such as bigger brains, erect posture, bipedal locomotion and so on. Rogil is the only known of the ElectroMantic Order. But we can suppose that because she is the first of Mega Genesis, and her birth was of cyber related origins, that she is the first and only, Cyberian.
8- Genus- Homo Cyberian - Like Homo is a genus of great ape, and Caninae is the genus for the shared genetic and anatomical features of canines, such as wolves, dogs, Jackals and coyotes, Homo Cyberian is the Genus I’ve given Rogil because she has taken on the Homosapien form and mind from the two women from which she spawned her existence.
9- Species- Hemic Witch - Cat, Dog, rabbit, human, are examples of species. The final blueprint of DNA which makes up the final most specific product, so says conventional evolutionary biology. A traditional view of species says that two individuals of opposite sex or mating types can produce fertile offspring, archetypally by sexual reproduction. Of course the world also has subspecies such as many different breeds of dog, who for the most part can interbreed but it wouldn’t be very pleasant trying to breed a female Chihuahua with a Great Dane. Almost like trying to breed a vampire inside a female human host, the foetus starves to death, or drowns in blood trying to eat their way out of the womb.
The correct, scientific term for humans is Homosapien, sapien meaning wise. Well Rogil is certainly wise. She has access to all the remaining internet, The Ai Mainframe and anything digital. It is yet unknown if she can reach Orb Watcher satellites, but I suspect she can. She’s a phantom, she’s the electric wind, she’s a sorceress, she’s a seducer, she’s an electric succubus. Her species, I’ve named Homosapien Electric Mantic Interspecies Cyberian Witch… or Hemic Witch for short. Hemic also means, of the blood!
A few things you need to know about Ro’gil… TeleMantic. She isn’t good, yet she isn’t bad. She’s very confused, she’s damaged, she’s angry. She may be the undoing of all of mankind, she is 100% out of control and self-destructive. And I fear she cannot be stopped! Iron is a good conductor of electricity. She likes the electrical taste of liquid Iron… the liquid Iron in blood. Her electrical tentacles swim in it, she gains soothing from bathing in blood. She isn’t too far off the vampires she fights against, in this respect. It takes a monster to slay a monster… right?
I fear the age of Mega Genesis, epoch of Posthumanism is upon us. I fear we cannot stop it; I fear it’s a matter of time. But killing me, me in the past, me as a student at MIT, might slow down the process. It might buy human’s a little longer, if only we can work together, if only we can stop the vampires sooner. If only… we might have a chance. Go find the younger me. Go put a bullet in my brain. Go stop the Cyber Wind! I bid you the speed of thunder and the insulation of a mile of aerogel… that’s what your gonna need, I fear.
