Me-Town- Raw Flavoured Fiction
With Ai taking over the literary and film industry, the world is hankering for stories about real lives, real struggles, real trauma, with deep and meaningful lessons and warnings to give. Things about a person or a place or events that readers need to know, but nobody else can express except the narrator. Yet told in a hyperbolic fictional way, realistic yet kernels of truth are buried in narrative, plot, fictitious events and caricatures of real people with inflated traits, emotions, motivations, traumas, transgressions, secrets, crimes and so on.
Me-Town is expression on the edge, balancing on the knife handle, debating whether to ass-slide down the sharp blade! Cultivating sensibilities yet flipping the filthy underbelly of existence up for all to see and experience, warts and all. We are not learning what we should from pretty idealised and purified simulacrums of society, the rule of law, human rights, corruption, sexuality, intellect, technological advancements, social cultural change, gender politics, race, religion, drugs, trauma, gender wars, violence, friendships, conspiracies and the worst of all… War!
We’re making the same mistakes again and again. As a collective consciousness we need to grow up and be honest with ourselves and take responsibility for the darker nature of our species, and for the health of the home, our blue & green rock. Idealised and even over-polished mediums of communication; written, viewed, spoken, acted, woken, token… it’s all broken. It does not align with the truth we experience, visually, auditorily, kinaesthetically, emotionally and most of all spiritually.
The Me-Town Pocket Universe of the M.W. Wolf Megaverse, and indeed much of M.W. Wolf’s writing is about regaining truth of experience via yet unspoken and lesser trampled simulacrums. Creating truth within fiction, expressing raw emotions, cutting deep to the core of our psyches to understand the human condition and consciousness. Raw Flavoured Fiction may help us to reconnect with who we are and what we are doing upon this tiny blue rock.
As Ai’s influence spreads, people will want to read about social issues, real concerns and fears, real events, real news and internet narratives, yet submerged by characters and their desires, needs and troubles. Ai has access to everything that has ever been written, but it does not have access to you, your brain, your life events. The thing writers still have is the human condition, Ai cannot take that away from me. I am the one and only… Joke. Cheers Chesney Hawkes, great song.
Write about the criminal underworld of Accrington in Lancashire, for instance. Write about your time in the Police Service, or your struggles in and after serving in the Armed Forces. Tell us readers about life as a drug dealer or user, as a prostitute, as a convict, as a victim of domestic abuse, as a sufferer of bipolar or schizophrenia or any other mental health concern, as an orphan, as a sexual deviant, as a sexual experimental person, or a vulnerable female, as a kid with learning difficulties, as a Vietnamese kid during the US invasion, as a survivor, as a rich kid, as a hero, as a victim.
Real shit, from real people told from unique, phantastic, bombastic, and sarcastic ways. Throw in a pinch of satire, a bunch of rude words, dark humour and mildly offensive jokes. Because this is the truth of who we are and how we interact within our friendship groups, where we each take a bit of a ribbing to ground us, build morale and trust and to strengthen bonds. I’m not talking deviant, oppressive and hierarchical sorting bullshit like boarding school sexual hazing, nor military chugging alcohol and running the naked gauntlet, nor embarrassing or ousting, or roasting real people nor organisations. This stuff is too far and verges on bullying, oppressing and targeting. This is defamation, and the opposite of what Me-Town is about. Me-Town is about slitting the Freudian jugulars of the id, ego and superego of our psychic apparatus and bleeding messy truths onto pages, then painting the walls with anguished lifeblood.
We’ve all gotten too caught up in being offended and taking things literally. I mean, when I was growing up you’re gay if you don’t come out to play, now your gay if you do… oh I went there darlings. This isn’t homophobic, its inclusive. Gay is a powerful word with many meanings. To use it in a playful manner opens up a myriad of emotions, feelings, thoughts, considerations and avenues to explore in writing. And we should explore all avenues to understand social and cultural concerns. We must joke, cry, laugh, and speak about all topics to integrate them into our sense of community and collective.
Mushroom eating apes, or the divine creator, gave us speech to communicate, to unite and to share, not to alienate, silence and cancel. Be bold, be risky, be slightly offensive in a humorous way, but don’t mean to harm anybody and do aim up often.
The Me-Town genre is all the above. Its urban, its gritty, its naughty, its transgressive, its provocative, it’s shocking, its overstated, it’s true yet fictional, its bullshit wrapped in your finest bed linen, it’s your uncle in the closet, your spouse having an affair, your mum killed the hamster, your dad’s a secret national socialist, your gardener is a serial killer, the guy down the hall leaves chalk tally marks on the landing walls every time he leaves his flat, your sister is a hooker, your boss is a pervert, your brother ate a toad, you witnessed a girl slit her wrists in the girls toilets at school, now she’s haunting you, you got bullied in college, you got assaulted at university, you got fucked over by the British justice system, you fought the law and the law won, you overcame addiction.
We need to share, honestly, to come to terms with our pains and traumas… as of late, we have not been doing this. It’s exposure therapy, it’s cathartic and it’s self-soothing. Ai cannot do that. Us humans can.
You have something to say that Ai does not. This is Me-Town fiction. It’s you, your human experience, in your place on the earth, your place in society, told with a fistful of dripping bullshit, dark humour, repulsive autoerotic stories, true trauma and tragedies and lessons from life. Be funny, be mildly offensive, be brave, be sincere, cultivate sensibility and awareness of social issues in your writing, yet do not cower down to those who seek to tame your keyboard to make their bread. Go grind your bones, go write about the dark, wonderful, humorous, voluptuous, emotional and tragic rudiments of the human condition. That’s how you beat Ai. That’s Me-Town fiction. It’s Self-reflection and self-evaluation. It’s a study of the core emotions, thoughts, ideas and experiences which drive our behaviours. It’s a challenge to values, ideas, metanarratives, abuse of authority and social norms.
It can be said that some works of transgressive and realistic fiction already fit many elements of the Me-Town genre. However Me-Town is more focused on real events, struggles and conditions of life, told in fictional narratives in the period after- postmodernism, during the lead up to Ai entering the literary and film industries, during Ai’s siege and after Ai, if we make it that far… WE STAND!
Me-Town is attempting to explore ways forward, to navigate the turbulence of society and the destructive, warring nature of humanity. Keep an eye out for Me-Town books From M.W. Wolf Ltd. There will be many, there will be blood, tears, excrement, drugs, sex and rain.
